Publisher's Synopsis

Alan James returns to Banaga in West Africa against medical advice and company policy as he is not completely recovered from a car crash in which his wife died. Keen to use work as his therapy he wonders how he will feel, taking up his expatriate life again with so many sad memories. He is settling back quite well when he meets Patty and in spite of himself gradually finds he is falling in love with her. His feelings are reciprocated, but he vows to marry only when he is completely mobile again and able to think of providing for a wife and family. The country is politically unstable and against the backdrop of a coup d'etat and domestic upheavals in Banaga and England, Patty and Alan are separated. Their plans to marry are doomed to fail so Patty sets out to overcome all the problems, but can she win Alan back and restore the status quo? Living in Banaga is good, life is easy for expatriates, but for the local domestic staff and at their work it is a very different picture. For them, life is harsh and unfair.
