Publisher's Synopsis
Excerpt from Second Annual Report of the Officers of the Chicago Reform School to the Board of Guardians for the Year Ending November 30, 1857
The Board Of Guardians of the Reform School beg leave to submit herewith the Annual Reports made by the Superintendent, Treasurer, Teacher and Physician for the past year.
In submitting these reports to the Common Council, the Board Of Guardians point with satisfaction to the evidence thereby furnished Of the comparative success of the school, and of the good work it is beginning to accomplish. The report Of the Superintendent, though setting forth somewhat in detail the history Of the Institution for the past year, gives but a faint idea Of the Obstacles surmounted, the labors performed, and the actual sufferings endured by that indefatigable Officer. The misery and suffering, both bodily and mental, which the Superintendent, his family, and all connected with 'the school, underwent whilst in the Cleaver packing house, during the coldest weather of the last terrible winter, would not be credited except by those who actually knew all the facts. The members of the Board of Guardians; whilst doing everything in their power to alleviate as far as possible the inevitable exposure and suffering, could only wonder that any human being could voluntarily consent to undergo such trials and privations.
