This survey gives an account of recent progress and the current state of knowledge in biological research on the condition of schizophrenia. It gives readers an indication of what it is like to work in this area and of the evidence on which current ideas on the pathogenesis and treatment of schizophrenia are based. It combines an assessment of the developments in biological research in schizophrenia over the last 20 years with a personal account of the author's experiences in providing clinical care and assessment for schizophrenic patients.
