Tels sont les faits essentiels qu'il importait de rappeler brièvement. Ajoutons qu'entre le v° et le N° siècle, il n'y a pas de brusque coupure. C'est par un changement continu que les nouvelles formules d'art se substituent aux anciennes, jusqu'au temps où Scopas et Praxitèle en dégagent le caractère définitif. Nous devons donc, avant d'étudier l'oeuvre des deux grands maîtres qui dominent toute la période com prise entre l'année 380 environ et l'avènement d'alexandre, indiquer quels sont, au début du IV siècle, les principaux courants entre lesquels se partage la sculpture hellénique.
