Publisher's Synopsis
Excerpt from Schenectady, Ancient and Modern: A Complete and Connected History of Schenectady From the Granting of the First Patent in 1661 to 1914
The story has previously been told in various forms and with greater or less extent of detail. The groundwork of the history, that is to say the readily accessible data covering the first century and a half of Schenectady's life, is due to the earnest and painstaking research work of Prof. Jonathan Pearson of Union College. In this he rendered to the city and to subsequent writers of its history an inestimable service, for which the writer of the present work gratefully acknowledges his obligation.
For a great portion of the material for the making of a connected history since that period, however, the writer has had to rely mainly on available documents and the files of old newspapers. With these combined sources of information, together with various others, the writer trusts that he has presented herein a complete and interest ing history of Schenectady from its foundation to 1914.
