Publisher's Synopsis
Remember this as you live your everyday life: The gods of wood and metals of the ancient people are not the only worships that constitute idolatry.
Our obsession today, with pleasures, comfort, fame, and fortune is even more dangerous than the material gods of the past. Hear it from the Bible and tame your wild desires and save yourself: "Put to death, therefore, whatever belongs to your earthly nature: sexual immorality, impurity, lust, evil desires and greed, which is idolatry." (Colossians 3:5 NIV)
The commands of God in the Bible expressly tell us how to safely, and profitably, navigate through our broken world-at every stage of the world's brokenness.
We school ourselves not only on how to accumulate wealth, but also on how to keep the wealth from leaving us. Both the accumulation of wealth and the retention of wealth require discipline, just as in everything else that is good in life.
God commanded us on how to make wealth, as well as on how to keep the wealth working for us.
But we devised our own methods to keep us from obeying God's commands.
No matter how we each started out in life-religious or irreligious-as we get older and begin to tackle the all-important task of making the ends meet, we all begin to follow the ways of the world, because the world refreshes its methods constantly, to increase our appetites for everything that comes from the world.
For a very long time now, wealth has been leading everything in human life at the exclusion of all else!
We have been on this path for so long and have invented many specialties about leading our lives with wealth, and on maintaining strong grips on the wealth, with whatever military strength we can muster, as well as whatever deceptive practices we can put together.
The world's single-minded pursuit of wealth has dealt a mortal blow to marriage, especially. And family is suffering tremendously because of that!
Not only has our living for wealth thrashed God's law for marriage, which stipulates that a woman that is married to a man is a helper suitable for the man she is married to (Genesis 2:18,20); and must limit her sexual desires to him alone and submit to him in all things (Genesis 3:16); (Ephesians 5:22-24).
Our living for wealth has also gotten us to create all kinds of senselessness as marriage, which we then legalize.
The woman was created by God (Genesis 2:21-22) for marriage (Genesis 2:18,20) and marriage was created by God (Genesis 2:18,20,22-23) to justify human salvation: Genesis 2:23 NIV - "This is now bone of my bones and flesh of my flesh; she shall be called 'woman, ' for she was taken out of man."
Ephesians 5:22-33 KJV - "Wives, submit yourselves unto your own husbands, as unto the Lord.23 For the husband is the head of the wife, even as Christ is the head of the church: and he is the saviour of the body. 24 Therefore as the church is subject unto Christ, so let the wives be to their own husbands in every thing. 25 Husbands, love your wives, even as Christ also loved the church, and gave himself for it."
Instead of sticking to the truths that were clearly stated in the Bible, to convince people about God's faithfulness and the power of God's word (Hebrews 4:12), we continue to lose grounds to the world's methods every day, as the world's own message-although pervasive-puts food on more people's tables and helps them take care of the needs of their respective families, in comparison to our respective religious modifications of the truths of the Bib...
