Publisher's Synopsis

This text shows teachers how best to exploit satellite television (STV) in the languages classroom. STV may motivate and entertain both teachers and learners and improve linguistic performance and awareness of the lives of native speakers. Whilst concentrating on secondary schools, the guide encompasses teaching languages from lower secondary to degree level across the whole ability range.;Advice is given on selecting STV excerpts and creating building blocks to support learners' understanding of the authentic spoken language. Suggestions are illustrated by examples of STV exercises and worksheets which have been used in schools. The book also contains guidance on purchasing equipment, issues in training and costs, as well as four school case studies.;The information supplement contains details of current broadcasting satellites and foreign language channels available in the UK, a glossary of technical terms and a list of useful addresses. Annual updates are available on request.;The guide represents the outcome of the ESTEL research project carried out at the University of Wales, Bangor, and sponsored by the Welsh Office.
