Publisher's Synopsis

Based on a 4-year programme of research in development planning, funded by the UNCRD and the government of Indonesia in the Yogyakarta Special Region, this book addresses the increasing importance of rural-urban integration in Java. It begins with an analysis of communities located in different agroecological settings, but all within a short distance of Yogyakarta, in one of the most densely populated regions of the world. It examines the effect of rural-urban linkages on regional growth, employment and rural poverty and shows the increasing interrelation between rural and urban economies. The book analyzes in particular detail the changes in agriculture and questions whether the resulting industrialization and urbanization is generally beneficial. Providing directions for future policy and research in its conclusion, the book extends its theoretical findings into a wider international context and evaluates the process of urbanization in other parts of densely populated rice-growing Asia.
