Robert of Brunne's Handlying Synne is a medieval religious text that provides guidance on how to avoid sin and live a virtuous life. It is based on William of Wadington's Manuel des Pechiez, a similar text written in Anglo-French. This edition, edited by Frederick J. Furnivall, includes both the original text of Handlying Synne and the corresponding sections from Manuel des Pechiez on which it was based. The book provides valuable insight into medieval religious beliefs and practices, as well as the language and literature of the time.1901. Handlyng Synne is a collection of moralistic tales meant to show the English the errors of their sinful life; its intimate descriptions of daily life provide a fine social history of fourteenth-century England-it is far more history than literature. Brunne translated Handlyng Synne from French or Latin works, altering them considerably in the process. Like many translators of this era, Brunne took many liberties with the works he translated. This volume is Furnivall's middle English edition.
