Rodgers-Ramos, a history and creative writing teacher to secondary students, loved reading the Magic Tree House series by Mary Pope Osborne to her son Max. As Max got older and wanted to read more historical fiction, he could not find anything interesting at his reading level. Given that challenge and using her creative writing skills, Rodgers-Ramos spun her love of history into writing an exciting story for Max which became Riding the Double Helix.
The book includes thought provoking questions to prompt discussions as well as to entice the reader to do further inquiry into the historical figures and incidents mentioned in the book.
