Porous asphalt has been found to be a durable road surfacing material, as well as providing additional benefits such as the reduction of noise and spray. This report reviews the experience gained from extensive road trials by TRL and presents recommendations to assist those involved in the design, manufacture and application of porous asphalt. The road trials are interpreted in terms of the design and construction of porous asphalt layers; the properties that can be achieved from the material; and the maintenance implications of its use. The durability of porous asphalt ultimately depends on its proper design, construction and maintenance and this reference will assist in achieving the best possible results.
