Publisher's Synopsis
Roger L. Geiger is the author of To Advance Knowledge, published by OUP/USA in 1986 and recognized as a major study of American universities in the first four decades of the 20th century. With Research and Relevant Knowledge, Geiger completes his study of the American research university by carrying the story forward from World War II to the present. Whereas To Advance Knowledge described the development of the American university in a research setting, Research and Relevant Knowledge deals with the constant pressures over research in universities, much of it stemming from government priorities. The book focuses on such universities as MIT and Yale, where these pressures were particularly strong, and spends a great deal of time on the growth of the University of California, Berkeley, during the period. While the book takes into account `the silent generation' and student protests, the emphasis remains on the institutions themselves and the conflicting pressures of education and research.
