The larger portion of the books belonging to the Smithsonian collee tion, consisting of the books and pamphlets not included in that of publi cations of learned societies, is included in the enumeration of the Library books on the shelves. At the present stage of the library classification, it has been found impossible to arrive at an accurate knowledge of the exact number of books known as the Smithsonian library.
According to this estimate, the Library is composed of books and 218, 340 pamphlets.
