Publisher's Synopsis
Excerpt from Report of the Directors of the New Penitentiary, 1895
When it is considered that this work has been principally per formed by convicts, and that the most experienced workmen are almost daily leaving the work, by reason of the-expiration of their sentences, or by the exercise of the pardoning power, and their places supplied by fresh and inexperienced hands, the excellence of the workmanship is truly surprising, and reflects great credit upon the vigilance of the superintendent and his assistants. The greater portion of the convicts thus employed, during the last year', have displayed an industry rarely equalled by hired labor ers; and have improved their mechanical skill with a rapidity seldom equalled by indentured apprentices. This, it is believed, should be classed among the good results of the more rigid and systematic discipline, to Whichg the convicts have been subjected during the last year.
