The enforced idleness of the home collieries has not, of course, yet existed long enough to show its full effect on the coal trade, but even up to the present time the Customs returns of coal imported into western British Columbia from the United States are exceedingly significant. These imports for the year ending June 30, 1912, amounted to only tons, valued at as compared with tons, valued at for the year ending June 30, 1913. Or, taking the period subsequent to the commencement of the trouble. The imports from the United States into western British Columbia from September 1, 1911, to June 30, 1912, were only tons, valued at as compared with tons, valued at from September 1, 1912, to June 30, 1913, an increase during the ten months the strike has been in existence of tons, valued at or over 11 fold.
More significant still. Is the fact that in May and June, 1913, the coal imports from the United States into western British Columbia amounted to tons, valued at while in the same months in 1912 there were only tons, valued at an increase for the two months of tons, valued at or over 25 fold.
