The simplest manner of arriving at practical conclusions would, doubtless, have been to make actual trials upon a modern ship of war; or upon a hull correctly representing it not only in strength but also in mass, upon which the destructive effect of a sudden shock must largely 'depend. Such trials would have far exceeded the funds available; and it therefore became necessary to devise some other method.
