Publisher's Synopsis

This publication contains selected papers from Symposium 2, Topical Meeting A3 and Workshop I held at the COSPAR Meeting in July 1988. The papers in Chapter 1 are drawn from Symposium 2 entitled Geological Studies of the Earth's Surface, Crust and Lithosphere using Spaceborne Technology, and deals with the applications of space technology to potential field mapping; geodetic and geodynamic surveys and measurement of contemporary plate motions. Chapter 2, in which the papers have been selected from Topical Meeting A3 entitled Recent Results from the SPOT and Landsat Thematic Mapper Investigation Programs, covers a broad range of disciplines and approaches, from geology to agriculture to hydrology and from theoretical modeling to field studies. A selection of papers from the proceedings of Workshop I, Microwave Observations of Snowpack and Soil Properties are contained in Chapter 3. The papers presented were concerned mainly with the extraction of geophysical information from microwave remote sensing instruments. The state-of-the-art in both experimental and theoretical studies was presented with an emphasis on properties and characteristics of snow.
