The current history of a number of South Asian countries is beset with problems, both with their own minorities and in some cases with their neighbours. Despite substantial economic progress their social fabric is threatened by the common foes of widespread poverty and underdevelopment particularly in rural area. This volume analyses implications of this general problematic focusing on the issues of governance and the nature of the state in post colonial societies.Collectively it questions the conventional view of incremental development juxtaposes traditional modes of governance with the new and innovative instruments and seeks to strike a balance between the vision of statesman and seeks a balance between the vision of statesmen and their follies
