Publisher's Synopsis
The book addresses important themes in regional development studies from the perspective of structural economic change. Particular attention is paid to factors which have long run implications for regional development such as innovation and knowledge production. Innovation and Research and Development activities appear to take place at particular locations, which has implications for long run spatial and sectoral developments. Transport infrastructure also has long run spatial implications, and the impacts of this factor on efficiency and equity are surveyed. Other themes covered in the book include the role of tourism and adjustments in urban economies. The book contains a fair balance between theoretical and applied work; and between modelling and non-modelling approaches. Moreover, both country specific contributions and some studies at the European level are included. - -
