These three brigade commanders rose to high command: General Meade to the com mand of the Army of the Potomac; Gen eral Reynolds to the command of the First Corps in the Army of the Potomac (he was killed in the Battle of Gettysburg, July 1, General Ord to the command of a corps in the Army of the Potomac. The presence of the Pennsylvania Reserves in Washington, the day after the first battle of Bull Run, saved the capital from being captured by the enemy.
The division was in eighteen battles. Of the -forty - seven regiments which sustained the greatest losses in battle, during the war.
