Publisher's Synopsis
This book is the outcome of a workshop on dental calculus (the modern name for tartar) held at Noordwijerhout, The Netherlands, on 6-9 November 1988, and organized by The Research Group on Surface and Colloid Phenomena in the Oral Cavity, under the auspices of the Council of Europe.;Recent years have seen an upsurge of new research activity related to dental calculus, including the arrival of anti-calculus toothpastes on the market. Calculus is not only of considerable commercial interest; the effects of calculus on periodontal health, its role in the changing prevalence of caries and its potential as a model for biological mineralization have provided new stimuli to investigation.;The formation and inhibition of calculus, and its relationship to caries development and to underlying physiological factors are among the problems addressed by this book, which reflects the wide range of methodologies now being applied in this important area of dental research.
