Publisher's Synopsis
Excerpt from Readings on the Purgatorio of Dante, Vol. 2 of 2: Chiefly Based on the Commentary of Benvenuto Da Imola
F raticelli explains line 42 to mean that the mode was totally di?'erent to the usual routine, which would te quire death to precede the possibility of ascending to Heaven, but Benvenuto, Lana and Buti all interpret the passage as meaning that, under the in?uence of the earlier Renaissance, it had gone completely out of fashion for poets to describe a vision in which they ascended up to Heaven. Besides Eneas and St. Paul.
