Aylmer himself was away in Switzerland, and the loan of his house was no more than a slight return for their kindness in giving him the run of Merestones, their place in Kent, during their long absences from England. Sir Richard Castle had an old-fashioned objection to its being occupied by anyone outside the family, and had persistently refused the most tempting offers from rich Americans to rent his ancestral home.
