Excerpt from Quincy Word List: Over Six Thousand of the Commonest English Words Carefully Graded for Elementary Schools
Some years ago the author of this Word List, being convinced that spelling learned incidentally, by absorption, was a failure, prepared a list of words for use in the schools under his supervision without any intention of making a spelling book, but repeated calls for the list have induced him to make it available by publishing it.
When used according to the author's plan it is not merely a speller but an elementary word study, although not expected to take the place of a dictionary in the upper grades.
The list contains over six thousand of the commonest words of our language, graded according to their con tent rather than according to their length, and arranged in groups adapted to a definite plan outlined under Sug gestions to the Teacher.
For convenience in finding any desired word of a grade, the words are given in alphabetical order, except, where homonyms and words easily confused have been separated.
The list of words for the eighth grade, together with the supplementary list, furnish twice as many words as are given in other grades, for the convenience of schools hav. Ing nine grades, and also for those teachers who may wish to give longer lessons in this grade.
