Publisher's Synopsis
Excerpt from Queenhoo-Hall a Romance; And Ancient Times, a Drama, Vol. 1 of 4
The scene of the piece is laid in Eng land; and the time, (in which the events are so pposed to take place, ) is in the reign of Henry the Sixth, about the middle of the fifteenth century. The do mestic manners, of the English, at that period, are very little known; though a thorough investigation of them is posi tively necessary, to link together, (if I may be allowed the expression, ) those of the preceding, and those of the suc ceeding centuries. Hence this publica tion maybe deemed generally useful; and especially to the lovers of old Eng lish poetry, which it will make muchrnore intelligible, in a variety of instan ces, by explaining many obsolete customs, frequently alluded to by the poets, and, above all, by the early dramatic writers of this country.
