Occurred to me that the Latin garb had much to do with this, and on that account I decided to present it in English. Here let me state that I have taken great liberty with the original. Not only have I translated freely, but I have frequently added thoughts of my own, only such, however, as naturally arise out Of the text indeed of certain parts it can merely be said that they are mostly a translation. Why this liberty What, it may be objected, is the necessity if the book is a really great one? Because - paradoxical though it may sound - a literal translation may be a very inadequate presentation of the original. That I had already known in theory, and I found it to be so in fact. The genius of a language is a consideration, or equation, that must not be lost sight Of - to do so might result in something like a body without a soul. Hence my aim was not so much a translation as a trans valuation. In this I hope I have succeeded, and that the version now offered may prove not unworthy Of the original.
