Is there an impact of municipal spending on education on the proficiency of students in Brazil's municipal school systems? A detailed analysis of municipal data and standardized proficiency tests assesses the extent to which greater public spending on education translates into better quality teaching. What is shown is that increasing the volume of resources is not synonymous with gains in proficiency.
