And yet there was so much that was new in the teachings of Christ, that His words began a new era, and opened new spheres of thought for mankind. In the first place, everything seemed new which fell from His lips. It came from Him with such spontaneous freshness, with such evident sincerity, with such clearness of form, with such felicity and force of illustration, above all with such an authority of char acter behind it, that men forgot that it had ever been uttered before. But then much of it was really for the first time declared by Him to the world.
