Publisher's Synopsis

Human-computer interaction, an important area in computer science, engineering and psychology, is examined in this volume from an industrial and organizational perspective. The practical problems of integrating computer systems into the work place are discussed, bringing together organizational issues, work place issues and software ergonomics. The book is organized into 6 sections. The first analyzes the organizational problems of introducing computers, and the interplay between the computer system and the organizational conditions. The second section looks at how the work place and the dialogue should be constructed to fit human needs. The next section (Cognitive Optimization of Human-Computer Interaction in the Work Place) discusses some specific issues of how software design can enhance human productivity. In the following section, suggestions for optimizing training are given. The final two sections discuss various conceptual and methodological issues that appear when taking an integrative and work place oriented perspective.
