It is to the undecaying gratitude of the arts and sciences, which so nobly flourished under their culture, that they are ih debted for the richness of their renown. How fade the splendours of warlike triumph, when compared with the rich trophy conveyed in the historian's record, that the inhabitants of Athens condensed, within the period of a single life, the genius of ages and millions! The library of Hadrian was embellished with the choicest pictures and statues; and so great was the estimation in which painting was considered, that Pamphilus, the tutor of Apelles, made a law, which prevailed through out Greece, that none but the children of noble and dignified persons should be permitted to learn it.
