Publisher's Synopsis

The objective of the conference on which this book is based was to provide the state-of-the-art of various methods of information processing for the analysis and assessment of different organ systems including the heart, the brain, the respiratory and renal system, as well as overall regulatory processes. There was a strong emphasis on automated EEG analysis and processing of evoked potentials. Perinatal monitoring, ICU and anesthesia monitoring, decision support and expert systems and imaging for function analysis were the themes of other working sessions. The book gives a fair reflection of the state-of-the-art in this field and of the achievements made over the last few years. Most of the progress in these areas has been the result of an integrated and interdisciplinary co-operation of physicians, engineers, mathematicians and computer scientists. The application of computer technology and basic methods of signal analysis and pattern recognition was the common denominator for many of the advances made in function analysis. It is a field where medical informatics, biomedical engineering and biomathematics merge and supplement each other.
