Excerpt from Professor Schroeder Van Der Kolk on the Minute Structure and Functions of the Spinal Cord and Medulla Oblongata: And on the Proximate Cause and Rational Treatment of Epilepsy
IN completing the task confided to me by the Council of the New Sydenham Society, I think it necessary to explain that the following pages do not consist of mere translations of the Essay of Professor Schroeder van der Kolk on the Spinal Cord, originally published by the Royal Academy of Sciences at Amsterdam, in 18544, and of his Treatise upon the Medulla Oblongata and Epilepsy, published by the same learned body in 1858. The distinguished author has kindly sent me so large an amount Of additional matter, together with alterations Of two or three portions of the original, in reference to which his views have [undergone some modification, that the present must be considered as a second edition of the above important works, enlarged and carefully revised by their author.
Under his direction, the appendix to the Dutch edition of the Essay on the Spinal Cord has been interwoven with the text. A German translation by Professor Theile, of Weimar, will shortly be published, in which the two works have been thrown yet more completely into one. The Council of the New Sydenham Society has, however, determined, that while both treatises shall be published in one volume, with a common index, they shall in other respects be kept distinct.
