This method Of calculating the rate Of marching on different classes Of roads under various conditions is the result of considerable study and careful analysis Of numerous actual cases, and should, it is hoped, assist staff Officers and others to avoid serious miscalculations as to the rate Of march when columns are compelled to use inferior roads or march under unfavourable conditions.
It is impossible, here, to go into the process by which the method was evolved, but the close agreement shown between rates calculated in this way with those actually Observed would appear to Show the soundness Of the method.
