This volume documents the proceedings of the Julian Szekely Memorial Symposium on Materials Processing held at the Royal Sonesta Hotel in Cambridge, Massachusetts, USA, October 5-8, 1997. It was an opportunity for the materials processing community to honour Professor Szekely for his many contributions to the field, and for specialists to present invited papers on key issues on solidification/crystal growth, gas-solid reactions, molten metal processing, plasma processing, iron- and steel-making, economic modelling and industrial ecology.
