To summarize brie?y the steps which led to the organization of this national society, without going back too far, the Tene ment House Committee of the Charity Organization Society was instrumental in creating the New York State Tenement House Commission of 1900, appointed by President Roosevelt when he was governor of the state of New York. That com mission was instrumental ln securing the enactment of the present New York tenement house law, applicable to all cities of the first class in that state, and for the creation of the tene ment house department of the city of New York. When the state commission disbanded most of its members continued their activities as the committee of the Charity Organization Society.
