Definite technique established. - D uring the past twenty-five years a definite technique of giving to pupils practice in problem solving or thinking has been developed in progressive American elementary schools. It is the purpose of this series of articles to acquaint more teachers with this technique so that any skilled teacher who is a good thinker may give pupils practice in prqblem solving and make them aware of the elements of skill in effective thinking. In order to show the importance and validity of the practices to be described we shall also discuss the place of problem solving in everyday life and the ways in which great problem solvers think.
