The central situation and importance of Inverness, and the connexion which subsists between its inhabitants and those of various parts of the united kingdom and the colonies, pointed it out as the most suitable place in which to com mence the establishment. From the en couragement which it has received, - ex ceeding the most sanguine expectations of those with whom the measure originated, they have the satisfaction of believing that their anticipations of the benefits likely to result from it, and of the feelings with which it would be regarded by their coun trymen, - were Well founded. As it is hoped that all interested in the advance ment of knowledge, and the improve ment of the Highlands, will now be dis posed to give their support to the Insti tution, a list of its members, with a short noticeof its proceedings, and of the dona tions already received, are subjoined the Appendix to this volume, from an ex amination *of which, its character and re spectability, .and the extent of the Muz seum, may be justly appreciated.
