Publisher's Synopsis
Introduction
Internal medicine is a branch of medicine that focuses on diagnosing and treating adult diseases with medicine rather than surgery. It is virtually identical to the physician's practice, in contrast to the surgeon's. Cardiology, dermatology, and gastroenterology are all branches of internal medicine, which focuses on the patient as a whole rather than a specific organ system. In the United States and many other nations, the term "internist" refers to an advanced practitioner of internal medicine.
