Prince Igor is an opera in four acts with a prologue, composed by Aleksandr Porfir�������evich Borodin in 1869-1887. The libretto was written by the composer himself, with help from Vladimir Stasov and the composer�������s close friend Modest Mussorgsky. The opera tells the story of Prince Igor, a Russian ruler who leads his army against the Polovtsian nomads. After a defeat in battle, he is captured and held captive by the Polovtsian Khan Konchak. During his captivity, Igor falls in love with Konchak�������s daughter, Konchakovna, and the two share a duet. Meanwhile, Igor�������s wife, Yaroslavna, is left to rule over their kingdom and faces challenges from within and outside the court.The music of Prince Igor is known for its use of Russian folk melodies and its grand choruses. The famous Polovtsian Dances, which take place in Act II, are often performed as a standalone piece. The opera was left unfinished at Borodin�������s death in 1887, and was completed by Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov and Aleksandr Glazunov. The premiere of the completed version took place in St. Petersburg in 1890 and was a success.
