The present volume is a collection of the Presidential Addresses delivered at meetings of the Society for Psychical Research during the first thirty years of its existence from its foundation in 1882. These Addresses show the aims which the founders of the Society set before themselves and the methods of investi gation and criticism which they and their successors endeavoured to follow, and also give incidentally some of the history of the work actually accomplished by the Society. They are reprinted from the Proceedings of the Society, in which they originally appeared.
