The MRCOG examination is designed to test candidates' knowledge and ability as an obstetrician and gynaecologist after completion of basic training. Success in the examination indicates suitability for advanced training in order to achieve full specialist status. It is thus an entrance rather than an exit examination.;This book is a guide for those who wish to become consultant obstetricians and gynaecologists.;It has been prepared by authors who are all experienced examiners for the Royal College of Obstetricans and Gynaecologists. It is designed to help those who wish to specialize in obstetrics and gynaecology and aspire to be members of the College. The authors detail the steps of training required by the College for the Membership Examination and comment on the pitfalls that their experience indicates have caused difficulties for candidates.;Sample cases and helpful advice about the preparation of Commentaries are given and the use of the new log book is described. Advice is given about preparation for the examination itself and how to tackle the papers as well as the clinical and oral parts of the examination. The marking system is described and the successful candidate is taken through post examination events right up to the point when he leaves the college after the Admission Ceremony. Further training for accreditation is discussed and the new subspecialty training programmes are detailed.;Admission to the Memebership is followed by continued training to obtain accreditation or its equivalent in the normal progress to independent clinical consultant or specialist practice. Recently, subspecialization has been introduced and details are given regarding the four chosen disciplines, reproductive medicine, fetal medicine, gynaecological oncology and uruology. These are included to emphasize that training after the Membership is intended to produce an obstetrician and gynaecologist who is not only a generalist but who also has an additional special interest.;Examinations are not static and are continually being assessed and reassessed and the MRCOG is no exception. The authors have therefore included comments on the future pattern of the examination, some of which will be introduced and some which may not but at least they will provide the reader with an insight into the various possibilities available for consideration.
