A practical summary of poisons and their treatments by epidemiologist to Louis XVI, Pierre-Toussaint Navier (1712-1779). A work in two parts, the first of which gives a general overview of poisoning and asphyxiation (by means such as drowning and the inhalation of coal smoke etc.) and the second provides treatment advice for specific poisons, namely: arsenic, corrosive substances, verdigris (poisonous copper salts), and lead. His treatments include liberal application of thermal waters, particularly those at Bourbon l'Archambaut. A regular correspondent of the Royal Academy of Sciences in Paris, Navier wrote elsewhere on the hallucinogenic effects of cocoa and chocolate (1772), on exhumations (1775), and on the use of champagne against putrid fevers (1778).
