Plantation forestry is an age old practice as people use to plant trees on their farm lands and near their houses. There were tree festivals like Shalbhangika, Vanmahotsava in Gupta period. However, the expanse of these plantations were less. With the advent of industrialization, expanding population base and degradation of forest there is a urgent need to establish large scale plantations which on one ahnd fulfill the need of industries, fuel, fodder and timber requirement of people and on the other provide economic and environmental safety.
