Publisher's Synopsis
Local area networks (LANs) are a topical subject, and a great deal of uncertainty exists as regards technological concepts. This text is largely concerned with the products of LANs and their applications, and looks at the subject in the light of most recent developments and improvements, covering such developments in a systematic manner.;The most extensive and important discussion of recent developments is highlighted in the section concerning DEC and IBM local networks and their place in the overall spectrum of products. The SNA and DNA network architectures are included in this discussion, other current topics under scrutiny include MAP (Manufacturing Automation Protocol) and such products as IBM's Token Ring.;The work emanates from a series of lectures at the University of Bonn, which have been extended and revised so that the book can be understood by those with little mathematical knowledge of the derivations. It is enhanced by sections covering standards and a market overview.
