Ague is divided into three principal kinds: the Quotidian, having an intermission of twenty-four hours; the Tertian, having an intermission of fortyeight hours; and the Quartan, having an intermission of seventy-two hours. Each paroxysm has three stages: a cold stage, a hot stage, and a sweating stage. The indication is to make the stages succeed each other as speedily as possible. BE MEDIA. The cold stage is to be treated with artificial warmth, such as the pediluvium, hot fomentations to the epigastrium, and cordial diaphoretics with opiates. 1. ft Pulv. As soon as the sweating stage begins to subside, the disulphate of quinine is to be given and continued through the intermission, with the view to prevent the return of the paroxysms. 8. ft Quinise sulphatis gr. iij ad gr. vj; acid, sulphurici diluti gutt. v; syr. aurantii 3j; aquse deatillatsa 3x.
