The subject of this large and excellent part of our Liturgy is, the Collects, Epistles, and Gospels for the whole year; the knowledge whereof being so highly useful and necessary for the informing the minds, exciting the affections, and directing the lives of all good Christians, very well deserves our pains in explaining, and the reader's patience in perusing of them.
But, before I enter upon it, it will be requisite, by way of introduction, to premise a few things touching the name, nature, and ends of each of them; together with the antiquity of their use, and the fitness of them for the times and seasons for which they are appointed.
