Publisher's Synopsis
Jane Birkin was one of the world's most famous actors, performers and songwriters. She catapulted to stardom after the release of the controversial hit: Je t'aime, moi non plus, which was written by Serge Gainsbourg, originally intended as a duet with Brigitte Bardot but given to Jane instead. She died in July 2023. She was first married to composer John Barry, the father to Jane's first child, Kate. She moved to Paris in the 1960's and later started a relationship with Serge after her marriage to Barry broke up. This relationship with Serge Gainsbourg was to be the one of the most famous of 20th century France. They had a daughter, now world famous in her own right as an actor, Charlotte. The first volume of Jane's journal : 'Munkey Diaries' 1957-1982 (Weidenfeld) covered the first 25 years of her life, culminating in the split with Serge in '82. It was extremely well received and noted especially for the honesty and intimacy of the diary's contents. Postscriptum is the second volume and covers the period after her break with Serge, her relationship with Jacques Doillon, the birth of their daughter, Lou and Jane's extraordinary life that followed. In her own words: 'It's another opening, another journey, more curious about other people, discovering a new path ... concerts, tours, theatre plays, travelling, sometimes attachments ... It seems to me that I've been sailing on seas of rather unfounded optimism. I stopped writing this diary in Besancon on 11/12/13 ...when I learned of Kate's death...'. Readers of this second volume will be immersed in the writer's confessional style and will see an unique portrait of an artist... and most importantly a mother... The books also includes intimate family photographs and a filmography for reference. It will form a fitting requiem for an extraordinary figure in the world of entertainment.
