Publisher's Synopsis
"A multi-volume set containing the bilingual collection of biographical sketches of the Buddha Shakyamuni, followed by the twenty-eight Buddhist patriarchs in India, and the patriarchs of various schools of Buddhism in China. Originally compiled in the Ming dynasty (sixteenth century) by Great Master Zibai, the collection was later expanded by Elder Master Xuyun in the early 20th century to 330 patriarchs. Master Hsuan Hua, in the later part of the 20th century, inserted additional patriarchs to the collection and also wrote his own verses and commentary for each one. This bilingual collection of biographies, verses, and commentary will be an invaluable resource for Buddhist history and hagiography in India and China"--.
