Quando em 12 de abril de 1882, em carta, me dizias: Remetto - vos os vocabularios que me tínheis emprestado, os quaes estao em meu poder ha tempo immemoravel, uma fatalidade entendia nunca me permittir trabalhar seguido, e, trabalhando sempre, nunca pude fazer nada, nada posso fazer e nada farei, porque agora toca a arrumar a mala, bater a bota e seguir viagem do outro mundo, ou antes, deste mundo para o cemiterio, onde tudo longe estava eu de pensar que a 21 de dezembro desse mesmo anno teria de ir descer o teu corpo à sepultura e desfolhar sobre elle as flores da amisade humedecidas pelas lagrimas da saudade.
