At the very beginning of his career, when but a young man of twenty-six, he presented to the Physical Society of Berlin (july 23rd, his epoch-making paper on the Conservation of Energy (uber die Erhaltung der Kraft}, which set the whole scientific world agog and made its youthful author over night a famous man. In this study he proved mathematically that energy is indestructible that in passing from one state to another the sum total of the kinetic and potential energies of a system of forces remains unchanged. As the result of this paper he must be considered with Mayer, Colding, Joule, and Lord Kelvin, all of whom pursued their investigafions more or less independently, as one of the founders of the modern mechanical theory of heat.
